Temporary Graduate visa subclass 485 visa (TR Visa)

Introduced in 2008, the "485 visa" (TR Visa) is a work visa allowing international students who have successfully completed at least 2 years of study in Australia to stay in Australia for up to four years to work and/or study. This is not a permanent visa.

There are two streams for the subclass 485 visa:

  • Graduate Work stream
  • Post-study Work stream ( To be eligible for this pathway, the applicant must have successfully completed a Bachelor , Master or Doctoral degree in Australia; Additionally the first student visa should have been granted on or after 5 November 2011).

 First Student Visa  NA The primary applicant must hold (or have held) a Student visa that:
  • was granted on the basis of an application made on or after 5 November 2011 and
  • was the first student visa held by the applicant
 Validity  Usually up to 18 months.
Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay for 5 years.
 
  • Bachelor - 24 months
  • Bachelor with Honours - 24 months
  • Master by Coursework - 36 months (From July 2024: 24 months)
  • Master by Research - 36 months
  • Doctoral degree - 48 months (From July 2024: 36 months)

Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may stay for 5 years.
For Indian nationals:
  • Bachelor degree (including honours) – up to 2 years
  • Bachelor degree (with first class honours in STEM, including ICT) – up to 3 years
  • Masters (coursework, extended and research) – up to 3 years
  • Doctoral degrees (PhD) – up to 4 years.

Applicants may be eligible to apply for a second Post Study Work stream visa (Second Post-Higher Education Work stream).
Processing times 9 - 12 months 4 - 11 months.
 English Requirment
  • IELTS: an overall score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each of components; or
  • PTE Academic: an overall test score of 57 with a minimum score 43 for listening; 48 for reading; 42 for speaking and 51 for writing; or
  • OET: a score of 'B' in each of components; or
  • Toefl: Overall 83 with a minimum score of: 7 for listening; 8 for reading; 18 for writing and 16 for speaking; TOEFL iBT – only accepted if taken on or before 25 July 2023; or
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced test: Overall 176 with a minimum score of at least 162 in each of the 4 test components
Exemptions: Passport holders of United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand and the Republic of Ireland.

Different Rules apply to Holders of British National (BNO) or Hong Kong passports.
Qualifying visa The primary applicant must have held an eligible student visa any time in the 6 months immediately before the day on which the application is made
 The critical date
The application must be lodged within six months after the critical date.
The critical date is the date on which the results of the student’s final exams or of completion of the course were available or published. The date of graduation is not the critical date.

Age The primary applicant must be less than 50 years old at the time of visa application.
Form 1 July 2024: 35 years;
For Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders: 50 years
Australian Study The primary applicant must have completed one or more degrees, diplomas or trade qualifications for award by an Australian educational institution as a result of a course(s):

  • (a) that are registered courses; and
  • (b) that were completed in a total of at least 16 calendar months; and
  • (c) that were completed as a result of a total of at least 2 academic years study; and
  • (d) for which all instruction was conducted in English; and
  • (e) that the applicant undertook while in Australia as the holder of a visa authorising the applicant to study.
A course that has a registered duration of 92 weeks in CRICOS may meet the two academic years requirement.
The primary applicant must have met the Australian study requirement within 6 months before the time of visa application.
